THE CAMPOROMANO ESTATE

Camporomano is a 70-acre hilltop estate situated in Versilia, a part of Tuscany remarkable for its beauty. Occupied at the end of the 17th century by the Marchesi Garzoni family, among the oldest of the noble Lucchesi families, the estate remains today the ancestral home of Signora Oretta Martellini, a direct descendent of the Garzoni family, and her husband Gianfranco Pecchioli. Two of their seven children, Elena and Francesco, are actively involved in the management of the agriturismo overseen by Gianfranco.

Camporomano is a working agricultural estate, engaged in the yearly production of olive oil from its 10,000 or so olive trees. The olives, which are harvested in the late fall, produce a very fine extra virgin olive oil processed on the premises by one of the few privately owned olive presses in Tuscany. The oil is used by the cooking school and is also sold on the estate. There is also a limited production of fine wine, reserved for family and friends and for students at the cooking school.

Two beautiful villas stand out from the estate's smaller buildings. One is the family's ancestral home and the other houses the Toscana Saporita Cooking School. These villas face an imposing lawn defined by spreading chestnut trees that are flanked by formal herb and vegetable gardens set alongside the estate's idyllic swimming pool. Students' accomodations are inviting and comfortable. The houses and rooms have been renovated and modernized, but retain much of their original charm, antique furnishings and paintings.

Camporomano is located in the province of Lucca, which is the westernmost of Tuscany's eleven provinces. Besides breath taking views of the Apuan Alps, the Tirrhenian Sea, and the surrounding countryside, the Lucchesia offers an array of culinary ingredients unmatched by any other Tuscan province. For those who can extend their vacation, Camporomano offers the perfect base for touring and eating in Tuscany. It is only 50 miles to Florence and 20 miles to Pisa. The delightful towns of Lucca and Pietrasanta and the famous seaside resorts of Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi are nearby and easily accessible. Buses and trains are readily available and the estate is less than a mile from the autostrada entrance.
